The DVSA Fleet Driver Trainer Register was launched on 22 Apr 2002, as part of the governments road safety initiative. This course prepares trainers in how to specialise in corporate driver improvement, collision risk management, client contact, reporting procedures and understand how to assess and train a range of drivers of varying experience. In order to attend the course personnel must be a qualified Approved Driving Instructor. On successful completion candidates will be eligible to register on the DVSA Fleet Driver Trainer Register.

Training is delivered through a mixture of blended learning and one to one in car tuition. All of our instructors have been recognised for their professionalism and are also registered as an ORDIT and Fleet Trainer. Road Map to Success

Stage 1: DVSA Fleet Part 1 (Theory)

The theory test is carried out on the first morning of the course. It is therefore imperative that personnel prepare for this in advance prior to attendance. The theory test consists of 100 multiple choice questions. Personnel have 90 minutes in which to complete the assessment. The questions are focused on the following topics, grouped into 4 bands:

Driving practices and procedures, road and traffic signs, motorway driving.

Driver attitude, driver and the law, environmental issues.

Vehicle dynamics and handling, accident procedures.

Instructional coaching techniques, hazard perception.

The overall pass mark for the theory test is 85%. However, you must reach a minimum mark of 80% in each of the 4 main topic areas given above. It is therefore possible for you to get an overall mark of 85% or higher but still fail the test because you have not gained the minimum of 80% in any one or more of the 4 bands.

All the necessary pre-course study materials, books and training portfolios will be supplied on registration.

Stage 2: DVSA Fleet Part 2 (Driving Ability)

The Part 2 is an Advanced Practical Driving Test. During this process you are required to demonstrate a professional level of driving ability under formal assessment. The test will last for approximately 60-minutes, incorporating a strict assessment regime. A maximum of only four driving faults will be permitted. Candidates will fail the test if they commit more than four faults, or if they commit any serious or dangerous action.

Candidates must demonstrate a thorough knowledge and practical application regarding the principles of driving, road safety, hazard perception, planning skills, and be able to present a driving talk-through commentary for a period of 10-minutes.

Stage 3: DVSA Fleet Part 3 (Instructional & Coaching Ability)

The Part 3 is an assessment of the candidates ability to identify the faults and risk areas of the customer’s driving, analyse these faults and prioritise them in relation to the level of risk they present and to provide suitable coaching/training to eliminate, reduce or manage the risk areas identified. The test will last for approximately 60-minutes.

To measure the candidates ability regarding the delivery of driver development training, the assessor will role-play as a customer exercising a variety of strengths and weaknesses throughout. This maybe in the form of practical application, simulation and/or questioning by the examiner and will include:

MSM PSL.

Use of Speed.

Separation distance.

Other Road Users.

Risk Presentation.

Vehicle Safety Checks.

Fleet Coaching Ability.

Driver Attitudes & Behaviour.
