The changes, which will be rolled out from 4 December 2017, will ensure new drivers have the “skills they’ll need to help them through a lifetime of safe driving”.
Four changes will be implemented to the current driving test. Here’s what you need to know:
1. The independent driving test, which currently lasts 10 minutes, will be increased to 20 minutes.
2. During the independent driving test,
candidates may be asked to follow directions from a Sat Nav provided by
the examiner, or by following designated road signs.
3. Reversing around a corner and the three-point turn manoeuvre will no longer be tested. Instead candidates will be asked to to do one of the following:
-
Parallel park at the side of the road.
-
Park in a bay by either - driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out.
-
Pull up on the right-hand side of the road and reverse two car lengths and rejoin the traffic.
4. You’ll also be answering two vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions while you’re driving.
